This offering of HST 197 is radically different from others. Rather than confining our inquiry to ill explore the formation and development of human societies, cultures, political systems, religions, arts, and technologies in a profoundly integrative way that blurs the line between "prehistory" and ancient and medieval human history, we will study the history of the entire universe from the very beginning, and our species' place in it. By emphasizing a single, unified narrative of our existence from both scientific and humanistic perspectives, in universal as well as global context, we whistory. In this cosmic or "big" history approach, we will do the typical work of historians--finding, analyzing, and interpreting sources of information about the human past--while testing a model of complexity that spans the maximum knowable scales of space and time.
A unique opportunity to develop and refine your research skills by focusing on the topic of Miami University. Miami University has a history that bridges three centuries; is rich with people and events that provide many entrees into the past; and as with all higher education institutions in the US, is a history crisscrossed with issues such as race, gender, social and economic privilege, social mobility and young adult life. Students will conceptualize, research and present an interpretative understanding of the past at Miami University by completing a formal research essay or project. As part of this project, students will perform in-depth archival research using primary documents and conduct secondary research in the history of higher education institutions in the United States. There will be a strong emphasis on the ways in which historians approach the past in terms of causation and change over time. The class meetings will be devoted to the history of Miami University, tours of Oxford and the University, including "back-scene" tours of the campus, archival research training, and oral presentations of research findings. There will be daily quizzes on MU history, mandatory attendance, and a final full-length research project.
